The Democratic Republic of Congo, a country of continental dimensions, could very soon be digitally opened up. This is the determination shown by the new Ministry of Digital Affairs, NEPAD-IPPF, the PIDA programme and a great expert and ICT task manager of the African Development Bank, such as Mr Omar Samatar Elmi. Thanks to their efforts, Congo-Kinshasa will in the near future be equipped with a National Backbone capable of interconnecting the country and will finally be able to fill its digital gap.

NTIC: The urgent need to open up this country with continental dimensions

DRC: Regional connectivity project to be launched

This technology, for the uninitiated, is a backbone in the telecommunications context that the DRC has always lacked. It is a series of cables that carry the bulk of telecom traffic, using the fastest technologies and bandwidth over long distances. Everywhere, small telecom networks within countries will connect to this backbone, just as rivers join the flow of a river. This is a regional project that will be implemented by the government, PIDA and IPPF and will build capacity.

This will allow for a substantial increase in financial resources, which is sorely needed in this time of health crisis and global economic recession.
